What are stem cells?
Stem cells are primitive, non-specialized cells characterized by their limitless potential to proliferate and their unique capacity to differentiate into specialized cells whereby tissues are formed.
The procedure of cord blood collection is simple and quick, it is performed by midwife after umbilical cord separation.
Cord blood storage
Stem cells is what remains after cord blood processing. These cells are then transferred to special bags. The bags are placed in special containers where they can remain until needed. The entire procedure must meet all applicable quality standards.
Stem cells originating from the umbilical cord blood were effectively used for the first time in France in 1988. More than a decade later this method was implemented in Poland. Blood stored in PBKM (the Polish Stem Cell Bank) was first used in 2007.
