This breakthrough not only increases access to allogeneic stem cell transplantation for adults with blood cancers such as leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes when no suitable donor cells are available, but also marks another step forward in overcoming the traditional limitations of cord blood stem cells.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Umbilical cord blood stem cells are already used in the treatment of more than 80 severe hematological and oncological diseases. However, critics have often raised the concern that, due to the limited number of cells, cord blood could only serve as a source for transplantation in smaller pediatric patients up to a certain body weight. Scientists, however, are once again helping to overcome this challenge. <em>Cord blood has long been used in the treatment of hematological diseases. The cord blood transplantation performed with today\u2019s standards offers several advantages in selected patients. The early experience with expanded cord blood is very good \u2013 the retrospective study has shown that it has the significantly lower risk of relapse and graft versus host disease than most of the other stem cell sources. If the results are confirmed in currently ongoing prospective trial it will be the biggest news in hematology since CAR-T therapy was introduced \u2013 the possibility of getting to full health almost two times more patients that it is possible with current standards is truly groundbreaking news for patients and doctors c<\/em>omments professor Emilian Snarski, hematologists, transplantologists and Medical Director within of Famicord Group.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Zemcelpro\u00ae (formerly known as UM171) is an innovative, personalized stem cell transplant product based on a unique technology that expands hematopoietic stem cells from a single cord blood unit. The therapy combines UM171-expanded CD34+ cells with unexpanded CD34\u2212 cells, both originating from the same cord blood unit, developed by ExCellThera.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Each year in Europe, more than 10,000 patients are diagnosed with hematological malignancies such as leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes that require a stem cell transplant. Despite significant progress in donor availability, many patients still cannot access a suitable transplant. For many of them using cord blood stem cell was the only chance for life saving stem cell transplantation. Sometimes however cord blood unit contained too few cells to be transplanted and could not be used alone.
